His awareness of his symbolic status
Barack Obama is the first African-American President of the United States. He has never forgotten the truth of that statement, and has spoken many times about what it has meant for him to carry the burden of that truth.
In February of this year, he met with 106-year-old Virginia McLaurin, who was so excited to meet the first Black President that she danced for joy. His respect and hospitality evidenced in the video from her visit shows that he confidently carries the weight of his history, and is able to use it to connect with others in a meaningful way.
