His reaction to the Charlottesville violence has created deep uncertainty about whether he can effectively lead. During a staggering, impromptu news conference in New York following the violence-filled weekend, Trump blamed the violence on both sides of the conflict — equating the white supremacists on one side with the “alt-left” on the other side. It was a sad day in history to see a president defend racist groups.
